It is situated approximately 2&nbsp;km west of [Eckernförde](/source/Eckernf%C3%B6rde).

Windeby is part of the ''[Amt](/source/Amt_(subnational_entity))'' ("collective municipality") [Windeby](/source/Windeby_(Amt)). The seat of the ''Amt'' is in Eckernförde.

Windeby is east of the municipality of [Fleckeby](/source/Fleckeby) or [Osterby](/source/Osterby%2C_Rendsburg-Eckernf%C3%B6rde), but north of [Goosefeld](/source/Goosefeld).

Windeby means Wendish village in Danish and indicates a previous Lechite settlement in the village.
