**Wind River Peak** (13,197 feet (4,022 m)) is the highest point in the southern end of the [Wind River Range](/source/Wind_River_Range) that is located in the U.S. state of [Wyoming](/source/Wyoming). The peak straddles the [Continental Divide](/source/Continental_Divide) and is surrounded by National Forest lands.[3] The west slopes are in the [Bridger Wilderness](/source/Bridger_Wilderness) of [Bridger-Teton National Forest](/source/Bridger-Teton_National_Forest), while the east side is in the [Popo Agie Wilderness](/source/Popo_Agie_Wilderness) of [Shoshone National Forest](/source/Shoshone_National_Forest). In a [cirque](/source/Cirque) on the northeast slopes of the peak lies [Wind River Glacier](/source/Wind_River_Glacier).[3]

## Hazards

Encountering [bears](/source/Bear_danger) is a concern in the Wind River Range.[5] There are other concerns as well, including [bugs](/source/Insect), [wildfires](/source/Wildfire), [adverse snow conditions](/source/Classifications_of_snow) and [nighttime cold temperatures](/source/Rocky_Mountain_National_Park#Elevation).[6]

Importantly, there have been notable incidents, including [accidental deaths](/source/Accidental_death), due to [falls from steep cliffs](/source/Mountaineering#Falls_from_rocks) (a [misstep](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/misstep) could be fatal in this [class 4/5 terrain](/source/Yosemite_Decimal_System)) and due to [falling rocks](/source/Mountaineering#Falling_rocks), over the years, including 1993,[7] 2007 (involving an experienced [NOLS leader](/source/National_Outdoor_Leadership_School)),[8] 2015[9] and 2018.[10] Other incidents include a seriously injured backpacker being airlifted near [SquareTop Mountain](/source/Pinedale%2C_Wyoming)[11] in 2005,[12] and a fatal hiker incident (from an apparent [accidental fall](/source/Accidental_death)) in 2006 that involved state [search and rescue](/source/Search_and_rescue).[13] The [U.S. Forest Service](/source/U.S._Forest_Service) does not offer updated aggregated records on the official number of fatalities in the Wind River Range.
