'''Wilton Castle''' is a 12th-century [Norman](/source/Norman_architecture) [castle](/source/castle) located in south-eastern [Herefordshire](/source/Herefordshire), [England](/source/England) on the [River Wye](/source/River_Wye) adjacent to the town of [Ross-on-Wye](/source/Ross-on-Wye). The castle is named after the [manor](/source/Manorialism) associated with it.

This castle in Herefordshire,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/167009|title=Wilton Castle (C) Philip Halling|website=www.geograph.org.uk|accessdate=5 November 2018}}</ref> still standing mostly to [battlement](/source/battlement) height, remains a monument to its former lords. The Longchamps of Wilton in their time provided Bailiffs of [Normandy](/source/Normandy), [Chancellor](/source/Chancellor)s of [England](/source/England), [sheriff](/source/sheriff)s of [Hereford](/source/Hereford) and the [Welsh Marches](/source/Welsh_Marches) and enemies of [King John](/source/John_of_England).

They were succeeded by the families of [De Cantilupe](/source/De_Cantilupe) (see [Thomas de Cantilupe](/source/Thomas_de_Cantilupe) and links) and [De Grey](/source/Grey_(surname)) who between them built up a powerbase in [Wales](/source/Wales) and the Marches. [Matilda de Grey](/source/Matilda_de_Grey), née de Cantilupe, declared untruthfully in court in 1292 to King [Edward I of England](/source/Edward_I_of_England) that the castle had been built by her Longchamp ancestors in the days of [Edward the Confessor](/source/Edward_the_Confessor) (1042–66). In fact, the castle could not have been built before 1154 and certainly the 'barony' never held the [Marcher Lord](/source/Marcher_Lord) rights Lady Matilda claimed for it.

The castle was primarily associated with a branch of the [Norman-descended](/source/Anchetil_de_Greye) family of Grey, the [Barons Grey of Wilton](/source/Baron_Grey_de_Wilton), a prominent dynasty of Norman [Marcher Lords](/source/Marcher_Lords) in the Welsh Marches, who held it from 1308 or before. The castle passed from the family when [William Grey](/source/William_Grey%2C_13th_Baron_Grey_de_Wilton) was captured by the French at the end of the defence of [Guînes](/source/Gu%C3%AEnes) in 1557, and was forced to sell the castle to raise funds for his ransom.<ref>{{DNB|inline=1|no-icon=1 | prescript= |first=George Barnett |last=Smith |authorlink=George Barnett Smith |wstitle=Grey, William (d.1562)| volume = 23|pages = 213, 215}}</ref>

The castle was finally destroyed in the [English Civil War](/source/English_Civil_War) by troops led by local [Royalist](/source/Cavalier) [Barnabas Scudamore](/source/Barnabas_Scudamore), a period that saw skirmishes and sieges locally at [Goodrich Castle](/source/Goodrich_Castle), [Ruardyn Castle](/source/Ruardyn_Castle) and [Raglan Castle](/source/Raglan_Castle).
