# William Wayland

Lieutenant-Colonel **Sir William Abraham Edward Wayland** (1 September 1869[1][2] – 15 July 1950) was an [English](/source/England) [Conservative Party](/source/Conservative_Party_(UK)) politician and farmer. He sat in the [House of Commons](/source/House_of_Commons_of_the_United_Kingdom) from 1927 to 1945.

Wayland was educated at [Marlowes College](/source/Marlowes_College). He served as Mayor of [Deptford](/source/Metropolitan_Borough_of_Deptford) from 1914 to 1920, for which he was [knighted](/source/Knight_Bachelor) in the 1920 New Year Honours.[3] He was elected as the [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) (MP) for [Canterbury](/source/Canterbury_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) at a [by-election in November 1927](/source/1927_Canterbury_by-election),[4] holding the seat until he retired in 1945 because of a wish expressed by party leaders that no candidate should be aged over 70.

In 1931, the Conservative [whip](/source/Whip_(politics)) was withdrawn from him when he supported [Sir Ernest Petter](/source/Ernest_Petter), standing as an Independent Conservative against the official Conservative candidate, in the [Westminster St George's](/source/Westminster_St_George's_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) by-election, but it was restored before the [general election](/source/1931_United_Kingdom_general_election) later that year.

Wayland served as chairman of the [Empire Day](/source/Empire_Day) Movement from 1927 to 1948.
