== Trial and execution ==
On the 16th of August, he was brought to appear before the judge in the [chapter house](/source/chapter_house) of Canterbury, and was asked to respond to the accusations of heresy made against him. He replied that the judge should "comaund his dogs, not him"<ref name=":1" /> and demanded to know where the authority of "Dicke of Douer" (the [Bishop of Dover](/source/Bishop_of_Dover))<ref>{{Cite web |last=Ridgway |first=Claire |date=2023-08-21 |title=Monday Martyr - The 1555 Canterbury Martyrs - The Tudor Society |url=https://www.tudorsociety.com/monday-martyr-the-1555-canterbury-martyrs/ |access-date=2025-05-14 |website=www.tudorsociety.com |language=en-gb}}</ref> came from. He then rejected the papal bulls that were presented to him, declaring that [the Archbishop of Canterbury](/source/Thomas_Cranmer) was the rightful diocesan authority.<ref name=":1" /> Before the trial he also criticised [the sacrament of the altar](/source/Eucharist).<ref name=":0" />

He was then [burnt at the stake](/source/Death_by_burning) on the 23rd of August.<ref name=":0" />
