Colonel **William Pinney** (4 July 1806 – 30 May 1898)[1][2][3] was a [British](/source/Great_Britain) [Liberal](/source/Liberal_Party_(UK)) and [Whig](/source/Whigs_(British_political_party)) politician, and military officer.

Born in [Somerton](/source/Somerton,_Somerset), [Somerset](/source/Somerset), Pinney was the son of John Frederick Pinney and Frances née Dickinson, the daughter of [William Dickinson](/source/William_Dickinson_(1745%E2%80%931806)). He died unmarried.[3]

Pinney was first elected Whig MP for [Lyme Regis](/source/Lyme_Regis_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) at the [1832 general election](/source/1832_United_Kingdom_general_election) and held the seat until 1842 when he was unseated due to bribery, treating, and other corrupt practices by himself, and his agents, friends and parties.[4][5]

He returned to Parliament for [East Somerset](/source/East_Somerset_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) at a [1847 by-election](/source/1847_East_Somerset_by-election)—caused by the death of [William Gore-Langton](/source/William_Gore-Langton_(1760%E2%80%931847))—and held the seat until 1852, when he stood down to successfully contest Lyme Regis again. He then held this seat until 1865, when he stood down.[5]

In 1868, Pinney stood for East Somerset once more, but ended bottom of the poll out of four candidates.[5]

Pinney was also [Colonel](/source/Colonel_(United_Kingdom)#Colonel_of_the_Regiment) of the [2nd Somerset Militia](/source/2nd_Somerset_Militia) from 18 January 1850.[3][6]
