'''William Carnaby''' (c. 1595–1645) was an English politician who sat in the [House of Commons](/source/House_of_Commons_of_England) in 1640. He fought on the [Royalist](/source/Cavalier) side in the [English Civil War](/source/English_Civil_War).

Carnaby was the son of William Carnaby of Farnham and Langley Northumberland and his wife Mabel Carnaby, daughter of Cuthbert Carnaby of Halton Tower. In 1624 Carnaby was elected [member of parliament](/source/member_of_parliament) for [Morpeth](/source/Morpeth_(UK_Parliament_constituency)). He was elected MP for [Northumberland](/source/Northumberland_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) in 1628 and sat until 1629 when King Charles decided to rule without parliament for eleven years.<ref name=Willis>{{Cite Notitia Parliamentaria|converted=1|part=2|pages=229–239}}</ref> He was a close friend of the [Cavendish family](/source/House_of_Cavendish) and managed the estates of the Earl of Northumberland from 1634 to 1638.  He was [High Sheriff of Northumberland](/source/High_Sheriff_of_Northumberland) in 1635.<ref name=Wallis/>

In April 1640, Carnaby was elected [member of parliament](/source/member_of_parliament) for [Marlborough](/source/Marlborough_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) in the [Short Parliament](/source/Short_Parliament). He was elected MP for Morpeth again for the [Long Parliament](/source/Long_Parliament) in November 1640.<ref name=Willis/> He raised forces for the King and was accordingly disabled from attending parliament on 26 August 1642. He was Treasurer of the Army and fought in the Northumberland Regiment, commanded by the [Marquess of Newcastle](/source/William_Cavendish%2C_1st_Duke_of_Newcastle) at the [Battle of Marston Moor](/source/Battle_of_Marston_Moor).<ref name=Wallis/> Following defeat in the battle he accompanied the Marquess, the marquess's sons [Charles Viscount Mansfield](/source/Charles_Cavendish%2C_Viscount_Mansfield) and [Henry Lord Cavendish](/source/Henry_Cavendish%2C_2nd_Duke_of_Newcastle-upon-Tyne), the marquess's brother [Sir Charles Cavendish](/source/Charles_Cavendish_(Nottingham)), [Dr. Bramhall](/source/John_Bramhall) Bishop of Londonderry, [Lord Falconbridge](/source/Thomas_Belasyse%2C_1st_Viscount_Fauconberg), [Lord Widdrington](/source/William_Widdrington%2C_1st_Baron_Widdrington), the Earl of Elthyne and Lord Cornworth and was conducted by a troop of horse and dragoons from York to Scarborough.
