**William Carl Buchan** (born December 23, 1956) is an American [sailor](/source/Sailing_(sport)) and Olympic Champion. He won the [ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championship](/source/ICSA_Men's_Singlehanded_National_Championship) and was named [College Sailor of the Year](/source/ICSA_College_Sailor_of_the_Year) in 1977. He competed at the [1984 Summer Olympics](/source/1984_Summer_Olympics) in Los Angeles and won a gold medal in the [Flying Dutchman](/source/Flying_Dutchman_(dinghy)) class.[1]

He sailed for *[Stars & Stripes](/source/Stars_%26_Stripes_(America's_Cup_syndicate))* when they defended the [1988 America's Cup](/source/1988_America's_Cup).[2]

His father [William E. Buchan](/source/William_Earl_Buchan) won a gold medal in the Star class at the 1984 Olympics and 11 medals at the [Star World Championship](/source/Star_World_Championship). Carl attended [Mercer Island High School](/source/Mercer_Island_High_School) in [Mercer Island](/source/Mercer_Island), [Washington](/source/Washington_(state)).
