# William Bedster

**William Bedster** (1734–1805) was an English [cricketer](/source/Cricket) who is known to have been active between 1777 and 1794.

Bedster was born in 1734 at [Walberton](/source/Walberton) near [Chichester](/source/Chichester) in [Sussex](/source/Sussex).[1][2] He made his first known appearance in 1777, playing for [England](/source/Rest_of_England_cricket_teams) (i.e., the "rest" of England) against [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_county_cricket_team_(pre-1864)). He played for numerous teams, most frequently for England, [Surrey](/source/Surrey_county_cricket_team_(pre-1846)), and [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_county_cricket_team_(pre-1864)) in matches.[2]

Bedster was employed as a butler for five years by [Charles Bennet, 4th Earl of Tankerville](/source/Charles_Bennet,_4th_Earl_of_Tankerville) at his Mount Felix estate in [Walton-on-Thames](/source/Walton-on-Thames).[3][4][5] During this time he played for [Chertsey Cricket Club](/source/Chertsey_Cricket_Club).[6] He was frequently used as a [given man](/source/Given_man) by other teams. After his playing career was over, Bedster moved to [Chelsea](/source/Chelsea,_London) where he was an innkeeper.[3] He died in 1805.[1][2] A road in [Molesey](/source/Molesey) in [Surrey](/source/Surrey) is named after him.[3]
