# William Alexander Cosgrave

**Sir William Alexander Cosgrave**, [CIE](/source/Companion_of_the_Order_of_the_Indian_Empire) (1879 – 11 September 1952) was a British administrator in India. A member of the [Indian Civil Service](/source/Indian_Civil_Service), he was [Chief Commissioner of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands](/source/Chief_Commissioner_of_the_Andaman_and_Nicobar_Islands) from 1935 until 1938.

## Biography

The son of H. A. Cosgrave, [JP](/source/Justice_of_the_peace), of [County Dublin](/source/County_Dublin), William Cosgrave was educated at [Shrewsbury School](/source/Shrewsbury_School) and [Trinity College, Dublin](/source/Trinity_College,_Dublin), where he was a classical scholar. He passed into the Indian Civil Service in 1903 and was posted to the Bengal.[1]

Cosgrave was appointed a CIE in 1931 and was knighted in 1938.[1][2]
