**William Freney** ([/ˈfriːni/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English);[1] born 4 November 2005) is an Australian [soccer](/source/Association_football) player who plays as a [central midfielder](/source/Central_midfielder) for [Perth Glory](/source/Perth_Glory_FC).

## Club career

Raised in [Elderslie](/source/Elderslie%2C_New_South_Wales) in the suburbs of [Sydney](/source/Sydney), Freney began playing at age 5 for Camden Falcons before joining [Marconi Stallions](/source/Marconi_Stallions_FC) and then the academy of [Western Sydney Wanderers](/source/Western_Sydney_Wanderers_FC).[2]

In June 2024, Freney moved from [Macarthur FC](/source/Macarthur_FC)'s [Bulls FC Academy](/source/Bulls_FC_Academy) of the [National Premier Leagues NSW](/source/National_Premier_Leagues_NSW) to a two-year scholarship contract with [Perth Glory](/source/Perth_Glory_FC) in [A-League Men](/source/A-League_Men).[3] He made his professional debut on 21 December in a 1–0 win away to [Brisbane Roar](/source/Brisbane_Roar), as a [substitute](/source/Substitute_(association_football)) for [David Williams](/source/David_Williams_(Australian_soccer)) in added time.[4] His first start came on 14 January 2025 in a 2–1 home loss to Western Sydney Wanderers.[5] Local newspaper *[The West Australian](/source/The_West_Australian)* judged that he coped well.[6]

By February 2025, Freney was one of several young players who had transitioned into the first team at Perth Glory. He credited veterans such as captain [Adam Taggart](/source/Adam_Taggart) with aiding the step up.[3]

## International career

In January 2023, Freney was part of an Australia under-18 and under-19 schoolboys team that played friendlies away to their equivalents from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. He scored in a 2–1 loss in [Dublin](/source/Dublin) and a 3–1 win in [Belfast](/source/Belfast).[7][8]
