Musical artist

**William Christopher Champlin** (born April 24, 1983) is an American singer-songwriter, best known for his appearance on [Season 5](/source/The_Voice_(U.S._season_5)) of the [NBC](/source/NBC) singing competition *[The Voice](/source/The_Voice_(U.S._TV_series))* as part of [Adam Levine](/source/Adam_Levine)'s team. He finished in third place behind [Jacquie Lee](/source/Jacquie_Lee), the runner-up, and [Tessanne Chin](/source/Tessanne_Chin), the winner of the season.[1]

## Career

Before his participation on *The Voice*, Champlin reached some success as a songwriter. He collaborated with [Michael Caruso](/source/Michael_Caruso_(musician)) and provided backing vocals for [Ace Young](/source/Ace_Young)'s [self-titled album](/source/Ace_Young_(album)), and also played piano on [Michael Jackson](/source/Michael_Jackson)'s posthumous compilation album *[Michael](/source/Michael_(Michael_Jackson_album))*, on the song "[(I Like) The Way You Love Me](/source/(I_Like)_The_Way_You_Love_Me)". He was nominated in the [Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album](/source/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Contemporary_R%26B_Gospel_Album) category, for co-writing "Ordinary Me", which appears on [Heather Headley](/source/Heather_Headley)'s album *[Audience of One](/source/Audience_of_One_(album))*. *Audience of One* was awarded the 2010 Grammy in its category.[2]

Champlin contributed to the 2013 album "Sacred Ground" released by California Transit Authority, a band created by founding [Chicago](/source/Chicago_(band)) drummer [Danny Seraphine](/source/Danny_Seraphine). He sang lead vocals on three tracks: "Strike," which he co-wrote, "Staring at the Sun," and the album's titular track. He also provided background vocals on several other songs on the album. His father, former Chicago member and [Sons of Champlin](/source/Sons_of_Champlin) frontman [Bill Champlin](/source/Bill_Champlin), also appears on the album.[3]

He is now the lead singer of the gritty rock band Valley of Wolves.[4] They made their debut in 2018 with the release of the Album 'Out for Blood'. In 2019 they released 'Take it All' [*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] and in 2021 'Outlaws' was released.[4]

## *The Voice*

On the fourth episode of the Blind Auditions broadcast on October 1, 2013, he performed [Gavin DeGraw](/source/Gavin_DeGraw)'s song "[Not Over You](/source/Not_Over_You)." [Adam Levine](/source/Adam_Levine), [Cee Lo Green](/source/Cee_Lo_Green), and [Blake Shelton](/source/Blake_Shelton) turned their chairs but he opted to join Adam Levine.[5][6]

In the Battle Rounds, Wolpert won, and Champlin was stolen by Aguilera. In the Knockout Rounds, Schuler won, and Champlin was then stolen back from Aguilera by Levine.

## Personal life

Champlin was born and raised in Los Angeles, California.[7] He is the youngest son of [Bill Champlin](/source/Bill_Champlin), former member of [Chicago](/source/Chicago_(band)), and [Tamara Champlin](/source/Tamara_Champlin). He graduated from the [Berklee College of Music](/source/Berklee_College_of_Music) in [Boston](/source/Boston), Massachusetts.[8] He has one daughter, Harper.[9]
