He was also a recipient of the [Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords](/source/Knight's_Cross_of_the_Iron_Cross_with_Oak_Leaves_and_Swords). He was killed in action by the Soviet air attack aircraft on 24 September 1944.
