# Wilhelm Kirschstein

German mycologist (1863–1946)

**Wilhelm Kirschstein** (2 October 1863 - 1946 in Groß Behnitz bei [Nauen](/source/Nauen)) was a German schoolteacher and [mycologist](/source/Mycologist).

During his career, he taught classes in [Rathenow](/source/Rathenow) and [Berlin-Pankow](/source/Berlin-Pankow).[1] As a [taxonomist](/source/Taxonomic_authority), he described the mycological families [Niessliaceae](/source/Niessliaceae) and [Mytilinidiaceae](/source/Mytilinidiaceae)[2][3] as well as naming numerous fungi genera and species.

The mycological genera *Kirschsteinia* [Syd.](/source/Hans_Sydow), 1906 *Kirschsteiniella* [Petr.](/source/Franz_Petrak), 1923 and *[Kirschsteiniothelia](/source/Kirschsteiniothelia)* [D.Hawksw.](/source/D.Hawksw.) (1985) are all named in his honor.[1][4]
