'''Wiley Thompson''' (September 23, 1781 – December 28, 1835) was a [United States representative](/source/United_States_representative) from [Georgia](/source/Georgia_(U.S._state)).

Born in [Amelia County, Virginia](/source/Amelia_County%2C_Virginia), Thompson moved to [Elberton, Georgia](/source/Elberton%2C_Georgia), and served as a commissioner of the Elbert County Academy in 1808. He served in the [Georgia Senate](/source/Georgia_Senate) from 1817 to 1819 and was appointed [Major General](/source/Major_General) of the Fourth Division of the [Georgia Militia](/source/Georgia_Militia)<ref>Smith, p. 346</ref> in November 1817, a position in which he served until his resignation in November 1824.

Thompson was elected as a [Democratic-Republican](/source/Democratic-Republican_Party) to the [17th United States Congress](/source/17th_United_States_Congress) and reelected as a [Crawford Republican](/source/Crawford_Republican) to the [18th Congress](/source/18th_United_States_Congress). Thompson was then elected as a [Jacksonian](/source/Jacksonian_Democrats) to the [19th](/source/19th_United_States_Congress) and three successive Congresses ([20th](/source/20th_United_States_Congress), [21st](/source/21st_United_States_Congress) and [22nd](/source/22nd_United_States_Congress)). His congressional tenure spanned from March 4, 1821, through March 3, 1833.<ref>Smith, p. 346</ref>

After his congressional service, Thompson served as a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1833. He became an [Indian agent](/source/Indian_agent)<ref>Smith, p. 346</ref> to the [Seminole](/source/Seminole)s and was appointed in 1834 to superintend the removal of the Seminoles from [Florida](/source/Florida). This episode of his life was artistically described by [Thomas Mayne Reid](/source/Thomas_Mayne_Reid) in the 1858 novel ''Osceola''. Thompson was subsequently killed by a band of Seminoles led by [Osceola](/source/Osceola) at [Fort King](/source/Fort_King), Florida, on December 28, 1835, and was buried on his estate in Elberton.<ref>Smith, pp. 346-347</ref>
