'''Wijdenes''' ([West Frisian](/source/West_Frisian_(dialect)): ''Venès'') is a village in the [Dutch](/source/Netherlands) province of [North Holland](/source/North_Holland). It is located in the municipality of [Drechterland](/source/Drechterland) and the region of [West-Frisia](/source/West_Friesland_(region)).

The village was first mentioned around 1312 as Widenesse, and means "wide headland".<ref>{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/wijdenes |title=Wijdenes - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=29 April 2022 |language=nl}}</ref> Wijdenes started as a [peat](/source/peat) excavation settlement in the 12th century.<ref name="monument">{{cite news|url=https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu11_01/sten009monu11_01_0184.php |title=Wijdenes |author=Ronald Stenvert & Saskia van Ginkel-Meester |publisher=Waanders |location=Zwolle |year=2006 |language=nl |access-date=29 April 2022}}</ref> In 1282, a castle was built near the village by the count of Holland, but it was destroyed in 1296 by armies of West-Frisia.<ref name="monument"/><ref name="plaats"/>

The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1619 after the medieval church burnt down in 1616. The tower is from around 1500 and the [balustrade](/source/balustrade) and spire were added in 1839.<ref name="monument"/> The church is no longer in service, and is used as a recording studio and residential home.<ref name="plaats"/>
