'''Whittonstall''' is a hilltop village (altitude 252 metres or 826 feet above sea level) in the [civil parish](/source/civil_parish) of [Shotley Low Quarter](/source/Shotley_Low_Quarter), in [Northumberland](/source/Northumberland), England.

== Description ==
It is situated between [Hexham](/source/Hexham) and [Consett](/source/Consett), to the south of the [River Tyne](/source/River_Tyne) and north of the [River Derwent](/source/River_Derwent%2C_North_East_England). [Newlands, Northumberland](/source/Newlands%2C_Northumberland) is one and a half miles to the south. [Broomley](/source/Broomley) is a mile to the north. A minor road turns west at the north end of the village, crossing the [A68](/source/A68_road_(Great_Britain)) after two miles and eventually reaching the village of [Slaley](/source/Slaley%2C_Northumberland) near Hexham.

The most notable local landmarks are ''The Anchor Inn'', a public house<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.theanchorinnwhittonstall.co.uk|title=Home|website=www.theanchorinnwhittonstall.co.uk}}</ref> (pictured in the information box) and the chapel of ''St. Philip and St. James''<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/16183/find-us/|title=St Philip & St James|website=www.achurchnearyou.com}}</ref> set back off the B6309 road (following the route of the [Dere Street](/source/Dere_Street) Roman road<ref>{{cite web | url=https://co-curate.ncl.ac.uk/whittonstall/ | title=Whittonstall &#124; Co-Curate }}</ref>) passing through the village.   This starts at [Leadgate](/source/Leadgate%2C_Northumberland) (roundabout junction with the A691 and A692), heading north and crossing the A694 and River Derwent at [Ebchester](/source/Ebchester), passing through Newlands and after Whittonstall, continuing to Broomley after which it joins the [A68](/source/A68_road_(Great_Britain)).
