# Whitley Lower

**Whitley Lower** is a village near [Thornhill](/source/Thornhill,_West_Yorkshire) in [Kirklees](/source/Kirklees), [West Yorkshire](/source/West_Yorkshire) England. The parish church, dedicated to St Mary and St Michael, is part of the united [benefice](/source/Benefice) of [Thornhill](/source/Thornhill,_West_Yorkshire) and Whitley which also includes [Briestfield](/source/Briestfield).[1] The church was Grade II listed in 1985.[2] In 1891 the civil parish had a population of 879.[3]

## Governance

Whitley Lower was a [township](/source/Township_(England)) and [chapelry](/source/Chapelry) in the parish of Thornhill,[4] from 1866 Whitley Lower was a [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish), on 26 March 1896 the civil parish was abolished and merged with Thornhill.[5]
