A '''whenwe''' is a former British settler or [expatriate](/source/expatriate) who talks [nostalgically](/source/Nostalgia) about their former homes in colonial [Africa](/source/Africa), i.e.: "when we lived in..." (the origin of the term).

The original "whenwes" came from [eastern Africa](/source/East_Africa), mostly [Kenya](/source/Kenya). Being largely of colonial origin, they returned to the [United Kingdom](/source/United_Kingdom) or moved south to [Rhodesia](/source/Rhodesia) in the early 1960s. In 1978, Louis W. Bolze and Rose Martin published their satiric cartoon book ''The Whenwes of Rhodesia''.<ref>{{Cite book|first1 = Louis W.|last1 = Bolze|authorlink = Louis W. The next wave of whenwes left Rhodesia about 1980, at the end of the [Rhodesian Bush War](/source/Rhodesian_Bush_War). Thousands of [white Rhodesians](/source/White_people_in_Zimbabwe) moved to [South Africa](/source/South_Africa), especially to [Natal](/source/Natal_Province).
