'''What? Records''' was a short-lived [record label](/source/record_label) started by [Word Records](/source/Word_Records) and [A&M Records](/source/A%26M_Records), intended to focus on creative and unusual rock and roll records with spiritual messages. The intention was to feature Christian Rock artists that "wouldn't be too obvious" about their faith.<ref>{{cite book|title=Raised by Wolves: The Story of Christian Rock & Roll|page=143|first= John Joseph|last= Thompson|year= 2000|publisher= ECW Press|isbn=9781550224214}}</ref> It was founded in 1986. Its first release was [Tonio K.](/source/Tonio_K.)'s ''Romeo Unchained''.<ref>{{cite book|title=Hammers & Nails: The Life and Music of Mark Heard|page=199|first= Matthew T.|last=Dickerson|year= 2003|isbn=9780940895492|publisher=Cornerstone Press Chicago}}</ref>

In the short time that the label existed, it released albums by [Mark Heard](/source/Mark_Heard) (under the name of iDEoLA), [Tonio K.](/source/Tonio_K.) (two albums, the second of which was produced by [T-Bone Burnett](/source/T-Bone_Burnett)), and [Chagall Guevara](/source/Chagall_Guevara)'s Dave Perkins.
