**Wharanui** is a small village located in [Marlborough](/source/Marlborough_Region) on the east coast of New Zealand's [South Island](/source/South_Island) between [Ward](/source/Ward%2C_New_Zealand) and [Kaikōura](/source/Kaik%C5%8Dura). [State Highway 1](/source/New_Zealand_State_Highway_1) and the [Main North Line](/source/Main_North_Line%2C_New_Zealand) railway both pass through the village.

For over a decade, Wharanui was the southern [terminus](/source/Terminus_station) of a railway that ran from [Picton](/source/Picton%2C_New_Zealand) south through [Blenheim](/source/Blenheim%2C_New_Zealand). The railway reached Wharanui by 1915. It was intended to continue the line southwards via [Kaikōura](/source/Kaik%C5%8Dura) to a line being built north from [Christchurch](/source/Christchurch) that had its current terminus in [Parnassus](/source/Parnassus%2C_New_Zealand), but [World War I](/source/World_War_I) stopped construction and Wharanui remained the southern terminus of the isolated Blenheim section. Work south from Wharanui did not recommence until 1928, and delays caused by the [Great Depression](/source/Great_Depression) and [World War II](/source/World_War_II) meant the line was not completed until 1945. Wharanui railway station is still in use today, primarily as the southern base for [bank engines](/source/Bank_engine) used to help heavy trains on the line from Picton.

A small church is located in Wharanui, called [St Oswald](/source/Oswald_of_Northumbria)'s Church. This was damaged in the [2016 Kaikōura earthquake](/source/2016_Kaik%C5%8Dura_earthquake). Earthquake repair was complete by March 2025.[4]
