# West Mersea Priory

Monastery in Essex, England

**West Mersea Priory** was a [Benedictine](/source/Benedictine) priory in [West Mersea](/source/West_Mersea), [Essex](/source/Essex), England. It was founded in 1046 and granted by [Edward the Confessor](/source/Edward_the_Confessor) to the [Abbey of Saint-Ouen](/source/Abbey_of_Saint-Ouen) in [Rouen](/source/Rouen). As an [alien priory](/source/Alien_priory) it was taken by [Henry V](/source/Henry_V_of_England) who granted it in 1422 to [Henry Chichele](/source/Henry_Chichele), [archbishop of Canterbury](/source/Archbishop_of_Canterbury), for his college at [Higham Ferrers](/source/Higham_Ferrers). The priory was [dissolved](/source/Dissolution_of_the_Monasteries) in 1542. There are no physical remains.[1][2]
