'''West Lutton''' is a village in [North Yorkshire](/source/North_Yorkshire), England. It is situated approximately {{convert|9|mi|km|0}} east from [Malton](/source/Malton%2C_North_Yorkshire), and within the [Yorkshire Wolds](/source/Yorkshire_Wolds). The hamlet of [East Lutton](/source/East_Lutton) is {{convert|0.5|mi|km|1}} to the east. The village lies in the [Great Wold Valley](/source/Great_Wold_Valley) and the course of the [winterbourne stream](/source/Winterbourne_(stream)) the [Gypsey Race](/source/Gypsey_Race) passes through it.

The name Lutton derives from the [Old English](/source/Old_English) ''Ludatūn'' meaning 'Luda's settlement'.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://kepn.nottingham.ac.uk/map/place/Yorkshire+ER/Luttons+Ambo|title=Key to English Place-names|website=kepn.nottingham.ac.uk|accessdate=13 October 2025}}</ref> They are recorded in the [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book) in 1086 as one location, and were home to at least five families.<ref name=":0">{{cite web|url=http://opendomesday.org/place/XX0000/east-and-west-lutton/|title=[East and West] Lutton {{!}} Domesday Book|last=Powell-Smith|first=Anna|website=opendomesday.org|access-date=13 September 2016}}</ref> In common with other villages at the time, the Luttons suffered during [William the Conqueror's](/source/William_the_Conqueror) [Harrying of the North](/source/Harrying_of_the_North), during which many farms and homesteads were laid waste, evidenced by the dramatic drop in their annual contribution to the local landowner: from £14 in 1066 to less than £1 in 1086.<ref name=":0" />

West Lutton forms part of the [civil parish](/source/civil_parish) of [Luttons](/source/Luttons). It was historically part of the [East Riding of Yorkshire](/source/East_Riding_of_Yorkshire) until 1974. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the district of [Ryedale](/source/Ryedale), it is now administered by the unitary [North Yorkshire Council](/source/North_Yorkshire_Council).

In 1823 West Lutton was in the parish of [Weaverthorpe](/source/Weaverthorpe), the [Wapentake](/source/Hundred_(county_subdivision)) of [Buckrose](/source/Buckrose), and the [Liberty](/source/Liberty_(division)) of [St Peter's](/source/York_Minster) in the [East Riding of Yorkshire](/source/East_Riding_of_Yorkshire). Population, including East Lutton was 311.
