This article is about the given name. For the public square in Prague, see [Wenceslas Square](/source/Wenceslas_Square).

**Wenceslaus**, **Wenceslas**, **Wenzeslaus** and **Wenzslaus** (and other similar names) are Latinized forms of the [Czech name](/source/Slavic_names#In_Slovakia_and_Czech_Republic) [Václav](/source/V%C3%A1clav). The other language versions of the name are [German](/source/German_language): *[Wenzel](/source/Wenzel)*, [Polish](/source/Polish_language): *[Wacław](/source/Wac%C5%82aw), Więcesław, Wieńczysław*, [Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): *[Wenceslao](/source/Wenceslao)*, [Portuguese](/source/Portuguese_language): *Venceslau*, [Russian](/source/Russian_language): *[Vyacheslav](/source/Vyacheslav)*, [Croatian](/source/Croatian_language): *Vjenceslav*, [Lithuanian](/source/Lithuanian_language): *Vaclavas, Vaclovas, Venclovas* among others. It originated as a Latin spelling for Czech rulers. It is a [Slavic dithematic name](/source/Slavic_dithematic_name) (of two lexemes), derived from the Slavic words *veli/vyache/więce/više* ("great(er), large(r)"), and *slava* ("glory, fame") – both very common in Slavic names – and roughly means "greater glory". Latinised name Wenceslaus corresponds to several West Slavic, [Lechitic](/source/Lechitic_languages) given names, such as *Wieceslaw*, *Wiecejslav*, *Wieńczysław*/*Vienceslav*, *Vjenceslav*, *Węzel*, *Wacław* and a few more. In Lithuanian there is also the form Venckus, but only as a surname.
