*Kirkus* called the book "An elegantly crafted paean to the cleansing power of truth,"[2] and *Booklist* called it "[r]aw and beautiful."[1] *The Washington Post* named it one of nine influential young adult novels over the past 50 years, placing it alongside *[Harry Potter](/source/Harry_Potter), [The Outsiders](/source/The_Outsiders_(novel))*, and *[The Hunger Games](/source/The_Hunger_Games).*[6]
