**Wayne Boardman** is an English [wheelchair rugby league](/source/Wheelchair_rugby_league) player-coach. He currently plays for [Halifax Panthers](/source/Halifax_Panthers_Wheelchair) in the [RFL Wheelchair Super League](/source/RFL_Wheelchair_Super_League), to whom he captains. He has previously represented the [England national wheelchair rugby league team](/source/England_national_wheelchair_rugby_league_team).

## Background

Wayne Boardman is an disabled [wheelchair rugby league](/source/Wheelchair_rugby_league) player. He is a product of the [Wakefield Trinity](/source/Wakefield_Trinity) academy in the running game and has also briefly played for [Dewsbury Rams](/source/Dewsbury_Rams). At age 29 he suffered an accident and became a wheelchair user, joing the [wheelchair rugby league](/source/Wheelchair_rugby_league) and playing [wheelchair basketball](/source/Wheelchair_basketball) at a local club.[1]

### Club

Wayne Boardman has played his entire career to date at [Halifax Panthers](/source/Halifax_Panthers_Wheelchair). He played in both 2015 and 2016 domestic wheelchair finals for Halifax in which the team won both.[2][3] Boardman also won the inaugural [2019 Super League](/source/RFL_Wheelchair_Super_League#2019_season) title with [Halifax](/source/Halifax_Panthers_Wheelchair).[4]

### International

Wayne Boardman is the [England national teams](/source/England_national_wheelchair_rugby_league_team)'s first ever player, having the heritage number "1".[3] He has represented the country at the [2017 Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup](/source/2017_Wheelchair_Rugby_League_World_Cup).[5] where he finished runners-up with England to [France](/source/France_national_wheelchair_rugby_league_team) in the final.[6] He again was selected for the [2021 tournament](/source/2021_Wheelchair_Rugby_League_World_Cup).[7] this time beating [France](/source/France_national_wheelchair_rugby_league_team) 28–24 in the final.[8] On 4 March 2026, Boardman announced his retirement from international wheelchair rugby league.[9]

## Doping issue

In June 2021, Boardman was given a 13 month suspension from the sport for having [oxandrolone](/source/Oxandrolone) in his urine. This decision was overturned by the [court of Arbitration for Sport](/source/Court_of_Arbitration_for_Sport), deeming him to have "no fault or negligence" surrounding the presence of the steroid.[10][11]
