# Wayne Benn

**Wayne Benn** (born 7 August 1976) is an English football manager/coach and a former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football).

## Playing career

Benn began his career at [Bradford City](/source/Bradford_City_A.F.C.) before he signed for local rivals [Bradford Park Avenue](/source/Bradford_Park_Avenue_A.F.C.) in 1995, upon his release from City. He played in over 400 games for the club, as a sweeper or in central midfield. He briefly played on loan at [Halifax Town](/source/Halifax_Town_A.F.C.) before returning to Avenue in September 1996. He was player of the season in 1998–99. He left on a permanent basis in January 2004, signing for [Frickley Athletic](/source/Frickley_Athletic_F.C.). In November 2004, he left for [Emley](/source/Wakefield_F.C.) before moving to [Ossett Town](/source/Ossett_Town_F.C.) in the [Northern Premier League](/source/Northern_Premier_League).

## Managerial career

Benn took over as manager of [South Kirkby Colliery](/source/South_Kirkby_Colliery_F.C.) in July 2010. He had previously worked as the assistant manager at [Guiseley](/source/Guiseley_A.F.C.) and Bradford Park Avenue. He left South Kirkby Colliery at the end of the 2010–11 seasons and became the manager of Hemsworth Miners Welfare,[2] of the [Northern Counties East Football League](/source/Northern_Counties_East_Football_League). Benn left to become the manager at [Goole](/source/Goole_AFC) in the [Northern Premier League](/source/Northern_Premier_League) but later returned to manage Hemsworth.[3]

In 2019, Benn was appointed [Ossett United](/source/Ossett_United_F.C.) manager,[4] but both the [2019–20](/source/2019%E2%80%9320_Northern_Premier_League) and [2020–21](/source/2020%E2%80%9321_Northern_Premier_League) seasons were terminated due to the [COVID-19 pandemic](/source/COVID-19_pandemic). Playing in Division One East in [2021–22](/source/2021%E2%80%9322_Northern_Premier_League), Ossett United were in the top half of the table, but after only one win in three months, he was dismissed just before Christmas 2021.[5]
