He was educated and trained at the [City of London School](/source/City_of_London_School) and the [Westminster School of Art](/source/Westminster_School_of_Art). He specialized in [fairy tales](/source/Fairy_tale) and exotic scenes from Japan, India and Arabia. He illustrated [H. G. Wells](/source/H._G._Wells)' *[The War of the Worlds](/source/The_War_of_the_Worlds_(novel))* – among his first published illustrations, soon to be followed by a suite for *The Book of Baal*.
