**Warrsan** (28 February 1998 – 19 June 2006) was a [thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) [racehorse](/source/Horse_racing) foaled in [Ireland](/source/Ireland) who competed in [Europe](/source/Europe) and [Asia](/source/Asia). He notably won two successive runnings of the [Coronation Cup](/source/Conditions_races) at [Epsom](/source/Epsom_Downs_Racecourse).

## Background

Owned and bred by [Saeed Manana](/source/Saeed_Manana) of the [United Arab Emirates](/source/United_Arab_Emirates), he was sired by [Caerleon](/source/Caerleon_II), a son of [Nijinsky](/source/Nijinsky_II), and out of the [mare](/source/Mare_(horse)), Lucayan Princess.

Conditioned by veteran [trainer](/source/Horse_trainer) [Clive Brittain](/source/Clive_Brittain), throughout his life Warrsan was a difficult horse to handle.

## Racing career

His best racing results came late, beginning at age four in 2002 when he had two second-place finishes in the [Group 3](/source/Conditions_races) [Cumberland Lodge Stakes](/source/Cumberland_Lodge_Stakes) and [St. Simon Stakes](/source/St._Simon_Stakes). The following year, the five-year-old horse began to blossom as a solid competitor, winning the 2003 Group 3 [John Porter Stakes](/source/John_Porter_Stakes) in April then a few weeks later the Group 2 [Jockey Club Stakes](/source/Jockey_Club_Stakes). However, his most important win of the year came at [Epsom Downs](/source/Epsom_Downs_Racecourse) in June's [Coronation Cup](/source/Coronation_Cup), a Group 1 race that attracts the best older horses in the country. Much traveled that year, Warrsan raced in [Italy](/source/Italy) in the 2003 Group I [Gran Premio di Milano](/source/Gran_Premio_di_Milano) where he ran second to [Leadership](/source/Leadership_(horse)). He had third-place finishes in the [Gran Premio del Jockey Club](/source/Gran_Premio_del_Jockey_Club) in Italy, the [Rheinland-Pokal](/source/Rheinland-Pokal) in [Germany](/source/Germany) and in the [Hong Kong Vase](/source/Hong_Kong_Vase) at [Sha Tin Racecourse](/source/Sha_Tin_Racecourse).

In 2004, Warrsan became one of only five horses to win the Coronation Cup twice but then was beaten by [Refuse To Bend](/source/Refuse_To_Bend) in July's [Eclipse Stakes](/source/Eclipse_Stakes) at [Sandown Park](/source/Sandown_Park_Racecourse). In the fall, he won Germany's most prestigious race, the [Grosser Preis von Baden](/source/Grosser_Preis_von_Baden) at [Iffezheim Racecourse](/source/Iffezheim_Racecourse) in [Baden-Baden](/source/Baden-Baden). In 2005 he failed to win a record third Coronation Cup but in September won his second consecutive [Grosser Preis von Baden](/source/Grosser_Preis_von_Baden). Out of the money in both October's [Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe](/source/Prix_de_l'Arc_de_Triomphe) and November's [Japan Cup](/source/Japan_Cup), Warrsan was retired in April 2006. His connections had hoped to find him a place at stud but he reportedly died as a result of a [tumor](/source/Tumor) on June 19 at trainer Clive Brittain's yard.
