# Warren State Hospital

**Warren State Hospital** is a public psychiatric hospital established in 1880 in [North Warren](/source/North_Warren,_Pennsylvania), [Conewango Township](/source/Conewango_Township,_Warren_County,_Pennsylvania) near [Warren, Pennsylvania](/source/Warren,_Pennsylvania). The original hospital was designed by [John McArthur Jr.](/source/John_McArthur_Jr.) and constructed under the [Kirkbride Plan](/source/Kirkbride_Plan).[1] Its population peaked at 2,562 residents in 1947. As of 2024, the hospital is still active.[2]

Residents included [Nictzin Dyalhis](/source/Nictzin_Dyalhis)’s first wife and [Joe Root](/source/Joe_Root_(Pennsylvania_hermit)). Known staff included [Penny Colman](/source/Penny_Colman)’s father and [Philipp Schwartz](/source/Philipp_Schwartz) as well as Dr. Hanus Jiri Grosz, a Czech-born psychiatrist who went on to pioneer the use of group therapy in the U.S.
