# Warlaby

**Warlaby** is a small village and [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish) in the county of [North Yorkshire](/source/North_Yorkshire), England.[1] The population of the civil parish taken at the 2011 Census was less than 100. Details are included in the civil parish of [Ainderby Steeple](/source/Ainderby_Steeple).[2] In 2015, [North Yorkshire County Council](/source/North_Yorkshire_County_Council) estimated the population to be around 50 people.[3] It is south of the [A684 road](/source/A684_road) and [Morton-on-Swale](/source/Morton-on-Swale). It is 1.6 mi (2.5 kilometres) west of [Northallerton](/source/Northallerton).[4]

From 1974 to 2023, Warlaby was part of the [Hambleton District](/source/Hambleton_District) district, it is now administered by the unitary [North Yorkshire Council](/source/North_Yorkshire_Council).

The village is mentioned in the [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book) as having 75 ploughlands.[5] Its name derives from [Old English](/source/Old_English) and is believed to be from *Wærlaf's By*, a personal name.[6][7]
