Monastery in Dorset, England

Priory House

**Wareham Priory** was a [monastery](/source/Monastery) in [Wareham](/source/Wareham%2C_Dorset), [Dorset](/source/Dorset), England.

A nunnery was founded on the site by the [Saxons](/source/Saxons), possibly in 672, and dispersed during the [Danish](/source/Danes_(Germanic_tribe)) raids on Wareham in 876. It was refounded in 915 by [Elfleda](/source/%C3%86lffl%C3%A6d%2C_wife_of_Edward_the_Elder) and probably dissolved in 998.[1][2]

A [Benedictine](/source/Benedictine) priory, a dependency of [Lyre Abbey](/source/Lyre_Abbey) in [Normandy](/source/Normandy), was founded in the early 12th century on the same site. It was suppressed in 1414 as an [alien priory](/source/Alien_priory), and along with most of the other former possessions of Lyre Abbey was granted by [Henry V](/source/Henry_V_of_England) to the [Carthusians](/source/Carthusians) of [Sheen Priory](/source/Sheen_Priory) which he had founded. This house was [seized by the Crown](/source/Dissolution_of_the_Monasteries) in 1539.[1][2]

The site is now occupied by the Priory House, dating mostly from the early 16th century, with a few possibly earlier remains,[3] and operating since the late 1970s as The Priory Hotel.[4]
