**Ward O. Winer** (June 27, 1936 – May 25, 2025) was an American engineer who was the Regents' Professor Emeritus at [Georgia Institute of Technology](/source/Georgia_Institute_of_Technology). He was an Elected Fellow of the [American Association for the Advancement of Science](/source/American_Association_for_the_Advancement_of_Science), [Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers](/source/Society_of_Tribologists_and_Lubrication_Engineers), [American Society for Engineering Education](/source/American_Society_for_Engineering_Education) and [ASME](/source/ASME).[1][2][3]

## Life and career

Winer was born on June 27, 1936. He received his B.S. (1958) and M.S. (1959) degrees from the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan) and his PhD (1964) from the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge) in the [Cavendish Laboratory](/source/Cavendish_Laboratory).[3][4]

He was awarded the Tribology Gold Medal from the [Institution of Mechanical Engineers](/source/Institution_of_Mechanical_Engineers) (IMechE) in 1972.[5] He received the [Mayo D. Hersey](/source/Mayo_D._Hersey) Award from the [American Society of Mechanical Engineers](/source/American_Society_of_Mechanical_Engineers) in 1986.[6] He was elected to the [National Academy of Engineering](/source/National_Academy_of_Engineering) in 1988.[7] He received the International Award from the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers in 1997.[8] He was a member of the Distinguished Advisory Board for the International Tribology Council.[9]

Winer died on May 25, 2025, at the age of 88.[10]
