***Walzer aus Wien*** ("Waltzes from Vienna," titled *The Great Waltz* in English) is a [singspiel](/source/Singspiel) [pasticcio](/source/Pasticcio) in three acts, libretto by [Alfred Maria Willner](/source/Alfred_Maria_Willner), [Heinz Reichert](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Heinz_Reichert&action=edit&redlink=1) [[de](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinz_Reichert)] and [Ernst Marischka](/source/Ernst_Marischka), music by [Johann Strauss I](/source/Johann_Strauss_I) (father) and [Johann Strauss II](/source/Johann_Strauss_II) (son), arranged by [Erich Wolfgang Korngold](/source/Erich_Wolfgang_Korngold) and [Julius Bittner](/source/Julius_Bittner), first performed at the [Stadttheater](/source/Wiener_Stadttheater) in [Vienna](/source/Vienna) on 30 October 1930.[1]

## French and English versions

The libretto was translated into French by [André Mouëzy-Éon](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Mou%C3%ABzy-%C3%89on) and Jean Marietti, and first performed, under the title *Valses de Vienne* at the [Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin](/source/Th%C3%A9%C3%A2tre_de_la_Porte_Saint-Martin) in [Paris](/source/Paris) on 21 December 1933.

An English [musical theatre](/source/Musical_theatre) adaptation called *Walzes from Vienna* (with additional music arranged by [Herbert Griffiths](/source/Herbert_Griffiths)), played in London at the [Alhambra Theatre](/source/Alhambra_Theatre) in 1931 with a cast led by [Evelyn Herbert](/source/Evelyn_Herbert).[2] As *[The Great Waltz](/source/The_Great_Waltz_(musical))* it also played on Broadway in 1934, and there was another English version produced in London in 1970.[3]

## Synopsis

The action takes place in Vienna around 1845, and relates the rivalry between the Strausses, father and son, and the love of the young Resi for Strauss Jr., but with the help of a Russian Countess, father and son are reconciled and love triumphs.
