Born in [Waverley](/source/Waverley%2C_New_South_Wales), Sydney; he moved to the United Kingdom and played in the [Football League](/source/Football_League) for [Rochdale](/source/Rochdale_A.F.C.) and played first-class cricket for [Leicestershire](/source/Leicestershire_C.C.C.). He also saw active service in the navy in Africa during the Second World War.

Cornock was born to an Australian father and English mother {{Who|date=April 2010}}. == Football career ==
Cornock played for Royton Amateurs before joining [Ashton National](/source/Ashton_National_F.C.).  When National stopped playing in 1940 with the onset of the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War), Cornock switched to local rivals [Ashton United](/source/Ashton_United_F.C.) who were still playing. ==Cricket career==
Cornock was a right-handed batsman and a left-armed bowler, slightly below medium pace.<ref>{{Cite news|date=1 May 1948|title=Australians Start Well at Leicester|work=Nottinghamshire Evening Post}}</ref> In 1941 he set a league record score of 197 not out while playing for Royton Cricket Club against Ashton in the Central Lancashire Cricket League.<ref name=ash/> He spent the 1948 season with [Leicestershire](/source/Leicestershire_C.C.C.) scoring over 800 runs and taking 15 expensive wickets.<ref name=cricketonline/> Notable wickets included those of another footballing cricketer, [Denis Compton](/source/Denis_Compton),<ref name=cricketonline/> future [England](/source/England_national_cricket_team) international [Tom Graveney](/source/Tom_Graveney)<ref name=cricketonline/> and contemporary England players [John Dewes](/source/John_Dewes)<ref name=cricketonline/> and [Joe Hardstaff](/source/Joe_Hardstaff_junior).<ref name=cricketonline/>

He returned to Australia at the end of the 1948 cricket season,<ref name=cricinfo/> and later joined the [Cumberland Cricket Club](/source/Cumberland_Cricket_Club) in Australia.<ref name=ash/> He captained the side during [Richie Benaud](/source/Richie_Benaud)'s absences on national team duty during the 1959–60, 1960–61 and 1961–62 seasons and continued to play until his fifties.<ref name=obit/> He was also both president and club-secretary at Cumberland and was responsible with son John for the building of a sightscreen on the club's ground. The ground is now home to the [Parramatta Cricket Club](/source/Parramatta_Cricket_Club) and the sightscreen has been renamed in Cornock's honour.<ref name=obit/>
