'''Walcheren Barracks''' is a [drill hall](/source/drill_hall) located at Hotspur Street in [Maryhill](/source/Maryhill), [Glasgow](/source/Glasgow), [Scotland](/source/Scotland). It is located adjacent to the site of the former [Maryhill Barracks](/source/Maryhill_Barracks).

==History==
The current building was originally constructed in 1935 as the new headquarters of the 9th ([Glasgow Highlanders](/source/Glasgow_Highlanders)) Battalion, The [Highland Light Infantry](/source/Highland_Light_Infantry), which had moved from 81 Greendyke Street (now demolished and replaced by apartments) near [Glasgow Green](/source/Glasgow_Green).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/333020/details/glasgow+greendyke+street+drill+hall/|title=Site Record: Glasgow - Greendyke Street|accessdate=31 March 2014}}</ref> In 1967 it became the headquarters of the [52nd Lowland Volunteers](/source/52nd_Lowland_Volunteers), which was formed by the amalgamation of the redesignated 1st ([Glasgow Highlanders](/source/Glasgow_Highlanders)) Battalion, The Highland Light Infantry and the 5th/6th Battalion, The Highland Light Infantry, which had been based at the [Hill Street drill hall](/source/Haldane_Building).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/168523/details/glasgow+24+hill+street/|title=Site Record: Glasgow - 24 Hill Street|accessdate=31 March 2014}}</ref>

The building was named Walcheren Barracks in 1985 by [Princess Margaret](/source/Princess_Margaret%2C_Countess_of_Snowdon), on the occasion of the presentation of [Colours](/source/Colours%2C_standards_and_guidons) to the 1st Battalion, 52nd Lowland Volunteers. The designation Walcheren, was in recognition of [Operation Infatuate](/source/Operation_Infatuate), part of the [Battle of the Scheldt](/source/Battle_of_the_Scheldt) in which the [Glasgow Highlanders](/source/Glasgow_Highlanders) of [52nd (Lowland) Division](/source/52nd_(Lowland)_Infantry_Division) were involved in the capture of [Walcheren Island](/source/Walcheren) on 8 November 1944.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.combinedops.com/Walcheren.htm|title=Operation Infatuate|accessdate=31 March 2014}}</ref>

The barracks today forms the base of the headquarters and two companies of [52nd Lowland](/source/52nd_Lowland_Volunteers), 6th Battalion, [The Royal Regiment of Scotland](/source/The_Royal_Regiment_of_Scotland),<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.lowlandrfca.org.uk/VRF_Units/52_Headquarters.aspx|title=HQ Company, 52nd Lowland, 6th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland|accessdate=31 March 2014}}</ref> the regular recruitment team for the [Royal Highland Fusiliers](/source/Royal_Highland_Fusiliers), 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, as well as detachments of the [Army Cadet Force](/source/Army_Cadet_Force) and [Air Training Corps](/source/Air_Training_Corps).
