The '''walaycho''' (hispanicized spelling ''hualaycho'', also ''walaychu'') is a small [lute](/source/lute)-like fretted stringed instrument, the smallest member of the [charango](/source/charango) family. It is the same or similar to the ''maulincho''. The ''walaychu'' along with the [charango](/source/charango) and its variations are believed to have been born around Cerro Rico of [Potosí](/source/Potos%C3%AD) located in [Bolivia](/source/Bolivia).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.chalenavasquez.com/almacen/libros/CHARANGo.pdf|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190714184344/http://www.chalenavasquez.com/almacen/libros/CHARANGo.pdf|url-status=usurped|archive-date=July 14, 2019|format=PDF|title=Charango|website=Chalenavasquez.com|access-date=20 April 2021}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://stringedinstrumentdatabase.aornis.com/w.htm|title=The Stringed Instrument Database: W-Z|website=Stringedinstrumentdatabase.aornis.com|access-date=20 April 2021}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.charangosforsale.com/Walaychos|title=福建快3一定牛今天的:排列五走势图|website=Charangosforsale.com|access-date=20 April 2021}}</ref><ref>[https://www.amazon.com/Walaycho-Chord-Bible-Standard-Fretted/dp/190620747X] {{dead link|date=April 2021}}</ref><ref>https://atlasofpluckedinstruments.com/south_america.htm ATLAS of Plucked Instruments - South America</ref>

The word ''walaychu'' is [Quechua](/source/Quechuan_languages) meaning 'a lazy man, someone who always lays on the ground everywhere. In addition to this, an evil man'. It's a colloquial word in [Bolivia](/source/Bolivia) for a small charango variant. {{citation needed|date=August 2018}}
