A batsman who could bat at any position in the order and a leg-break and googly bowler, Wal Walmsley made his first-class debut for [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales_cricket_team) against [Queensland](/source/Queensland_cricket_team) in a [friendly match](/source/friendly_match) in 1945–46. He moved to [Launceston, Tasmania](/source/Launceston%2C_Tasmania), to coach, where he captained North (of Tasmania) against South in January 1948, taking 10 wickets in the match and scoring 63 in the second innings.<ref>[https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/179/179444.html South v North 1947-48]</ref> He played in [Tasmania](/source/Tasmania_cricket_team)'s three first-class games that followed shortly afterwards, scoring 180 not out and taking three wickets against the [Indian touring team](/source/Indian_cricket_team_in_Australia_in_1947%E2%80%9348) at Launceston.<ref>[https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/18/18350.html Tasmania v Indians 1947-48]</ref>

He also took six wickets in the match.<ref>[https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/22/22711.html Queensland v New South Wales 1957-58]</ref>

In 1958–59 he took 6 for 56 to help Queensland to an innings victory over South Australia.<ref>[https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/23/23228.html Queensland v South Australia 1958-59]</ref> Before the season ended, he moved to New Zealand to take up a position teaching at [the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints](/source/the_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_Latter-day_Saints) college in [Hamilton](/source/Hamilton%2C_New_Zealand),<ref>''Oxford Companion'', p. 560.</ref><ref>{{cite journal |title=Bowler to Teach at Hamilton |journal=Press |date=16 December 1958 |page=26 |url=https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19581216.2.208}}</ref> playing his first first-class match in New Zealand, for a combined Northern Districts and [Central Districts](/source/Central_Districts_cricket_team) team against the touring [MCC](/source/English_cricket_team_in_Australia_in_1958%E2%80%9359), almost immediately.
