During the retreat of the ill-fated [Imperial Japanese](/source/Imperial_Japanese) campaign along the [Kokoda Track](/source/Kokoda_Track_campaign) during the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War), Japanese Major General [Tomitarō Horii](/source/Tomitar%C5%8D_Horii) drowned while attempting to cross the Kumusi River at Wairopi, after the battle of Oivi-Gorari.<ref name=Brune4>{{Harvnb|Brune|2004|p=419}}</ref><ref name=Lindsay>{{Harvnb|Lindsay|2002|p=122}}</ref>
