Former county in New Zealand

Waimea County County of New Zealand 1876–1989 Capital Richmond History • Established 1876 • Disestablished 1989 Today part of Tasman District

**Waimea County** was one of the [counties of New Zealand](/source/Counties_of_New_Zealand) on the [South Island](/source/South_Island). The county existed from 1877 to 1989.

Waimea County in 1928

During the period 1853 to 1876, the area that would become Waimea County was administered as part of [Nelson Province](/source/Nelson_Province). With the [Abolition of Provinces Act 1876](/source/Provinces_of_New_Zealand#Abolition_of_Provinces_Act_1876), Waimea County was created, taking over administration of its area in January 1877. The county council's administrative headquarters was located in [Richmond](/source/Richmond%2C_New_Zealand).

Neighbouring territorial authorities in 1928 were (anti-clockwise from north) [Takaka County](/source/Takaka_County) (previously [Collingwood County](/source/Collingwood_County) and later [Golden Bay County](/source/Golden_Bay_County)), [Buller County](/source/Buller_County%2C_New_Zealand), [Murchison County](/source/Murchison_County%2C_New_Zealand), [Amuri County](/source/Amuri_County), [Marlborough County](/source/Marlborough_County), and [Sounds County](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sounds_County&action=edit&redlink=1). Neighbouring territorial authorities that were enclosed were [Motueka Borough](/source/Motueka_Borough), [Richmond Borough](/source/Richmond_Borough%2C_New_Zealand), and [Nelson City](/source/Nelson%2C_New_Zealand). [Stoke](/source/Stoke%2C_New_Zealand), these days a suburb of Nelson, was part of Waimea County and physically separated Richmond and Nelson.

Motueka Borough split off in 1900 to become its own territorial authority.[1][2]

In 1958, [Stoke](/source/Stoke%2C_New_Zealand), [Enner Glynn](/source/Enner_Glynn), [Wakatu](/source/Wakatu), [Annesbrook](/source/Annesbrook), and [Monaco](/source/Monaco%2C_New_Zealand) were taken from Waimea County and amalgamated with Nelson City. Waimea County lost [Atawhai](/source/Atawhai) to Nelson City in April 1968.[3]

Waimea County existed until the [1989 local government reforms](/source/1989_New_Zealand_local_government_reforms). One local body that succeeded Waimea County was the [Tasman District](/source/Tasman_District), which was formed through the amalgamation of the Waimea County, [Golden Bay County](/source/Golden_Bay_County), [Murchison County](/source/Murchison_County%2C_New_Zealand) and [Richmond Borough](/source/Richmond%2C_New_Zealand) administrative areas. Other areas were added to Nelson City. The regional council function was given to the shortlived [Nelson-Marlborough Regional Council](/source/Nelson-Marlborough_Regional_Council).[3][4]
