Originally chosen by the [Florida Panthers](/source/Florida_Panthers) in the [2009 entry draft](/source/2009_NHL_Entry_Draft), Megan played collegiate hockey with [Boston University](/source/Boston_University) in the [Hockey East](/source/Hockey_East). He is the son of former professional hockey player, Ron Megan, who played two seasons in the [International Hockey League](/source/International_Hockey_League_(1945%E2%80%932001)) with the [Kalamazoo Wings](/source/Kalamazoo_Wings_(1974%E2%80%932000)) and [Peoria Prancers](/source/Peoria_Prancers) in 1983 and 84.
