The '''WA89 experiment (Omega/Hyperon)''' was a [particle physics](/source/particle_physics) experiment operating from 1989 to 1994 in the West Area of the [SPS accelerator](/source/Super_Proton_Synchrotron) at [CERN](/source/CERN).<ref name=":0">{{Cite journal |last1=Alexandrov |first1=Yu. The initial aims of the hyperon beam experiment were to investigate charmed-strange quark baryons, verify and investigate the U(3100) and study baryonic resonances and decays whilst searching for the double-strange dibaryon H.<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Forino |first1=A |last2=Gessaroli |first2=R |last3=Quareni-Vignudelli |first3=A |last4=Viaggi |first4=F |last5=Barberis |first5=D |date=1987 |title=Proposal for a new hyperon beam experiment at the CERN-SPS using the Omega facility |url=https://cds.cern.ch/record/301194?ln=en |journal=CERN. == Experimental setup ==
The WA89 experiment consisted of a [beamline](/source/beamline) and a forward [spectrometer](/source/spectrometer). The beamline contained the [proton beam](/source/Charged_particle_beam) hitting the hyperon production target which was followed by a {{cvt|13|m|ft|adj=mid|-long}} hyperon channel. Three [dipoles](/source/Dipole) were used to provide a bending power of 8.4 [Tesla](/source/Tesla_(unit))-[meter](/source/meter)s. The target region consisted of two adjacent targets surrounded by [muon](/source/muon) strip detectors. Following this, a {{cvt|15|m|ft|adj=mid|-long}} [Λ](/source/Lambda_baryon) decay region was filled with six [drift chamber](/source/drift_chamber) sets and a spectrometer magnet.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Paul |first=S. |date=1989 |title=1. The beam particle trajectories along with their momenta were measured with a scintillating fibre [hodoscope](/source/hodoscope) in the beamline and a silicon [microstrip detector](/source/microstrip_detector) at the end of the line.<ref name=":0" />
