At various times it was either a [royal town](/source/Royal_city_in_Poland) of the [Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth](/source/Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian_Commonwealth) or a [private town](/source/private_town) of the [Holszański](/source/Holsza%C5%84ski) and [Sapieha](/source/Sapieha) families,<ref name=sgk/> administratively located in the Wołkowysk County in the [Nowogródek Voivodeship](/source/Nowogr%C3%B3dek_Voivodeship_(1507%E2%80%931795)). It was often visited by King [Stephen Bathory](/source/Stephen_Bathory) during his stays in nearby [Grodno](/source/Grodno).<ref name=sgk/> In 1643, [Kazimierz Leon Sapieha](/source/Kazimierz_Leon_Sapieha) received King [Władysław IV Vasa](/source/W%C5%82adys%C5%82aw_IV_Vasa) in the town.<ref name=sgk/>

The [Wołpa Synagogue](/source/Wo%C5%82pa_Synagogue) is located in the town, and is reputed to be the "most beautiful" of the [wooden synagogues of the former Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth](/source/wooden_synagogues_of_the_former_Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian_Commonwealth),<ref name="CH-K" /> a "masterwork" of wooden architecture.<ref name="TH">Thomas C. In the interwar period, Wołpa, as it was known in Polish, was administratively located in the Grodno County in the [Białystok Voivodeship](/source/Bia%C5%82ystok_Voivodeship_(1919%E2%80%931939)) of Poland. In the 1921 census, 59.9% people declared [Polish](/source/Polish_people) nationality, 38.9% declared Jewish nationality and 1.2% declared Belarusian nationality.<ref name=gus>{{cite book|author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.-->|title=Skorowidz miejscowości Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej. During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), the town was first [occupied by the Soviet Union](/source/Occupation_of_Poland_(1939%E2%80%931945)) until 1941, then by Nazi Germany until 1944, and re-occupied by the Soviet Union afterwards.{{cn|date=May 2024}}
