**Vortex Island** ([63°44′S 57°38′W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=63_44_S_57_38_W)) is an [island](/source/Island) 0.5 nautical miles (0.9 km) long and 245 m high, lying in the northeast part of [Prince Gustav Channel](/source/Prince_Gustav_Channel) about 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) west-southwest of [Corry Island](/source/Corry_Island), close south of [Trinity Peninsula](/source/Trinity_Peninsula). Islands in this area were first seen by a party under [J. Gunnar Andersson](/source/J._Gunnar_Andersson) of the [Swedish Antarctic Expedition](/source/Swedish_Antarctic_Expedition), 1901–04. Vortex Island was first charted by the [Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey](/source/Falkland_Islands_Dependencies_Survey) (FIDS) in August 1945. The FIDS survey party was forced to lie idle there by a whirlwind snowstorm, thus suggesting the name.[1]

## Geology

Vortex Island is composed of [Pleistocene](/source/Pleistocene) [volcanic rocks](/source/Volcanic_rock) of the [James Ross Island Volcanic Group](/source/James_Ross_Island_Volcanic_Group), consisting of a [tuya](/source/Tuya) or moberg, which is a volcano erupted under an icecap. Yellow layers are [palagonite](/source/Palagonite) weathering of steeply dipping [ash](/source/Volcanic_ash) layers, whereas black layers are [basalt](/source/Basalt) flows and [pillow basalts](/source/Pillow_basalts).[2][3]
