Ukrainian intelligence officer

Volodymyr Satsyuk

**Volodymyr Satsyuk** ([Ukrainian](/source/Ukrainian_language): Володимир Сацюк) (born 11 March 1963) is the former deputy head of [Ukraine](/source/Ukraine)’s intelligence agency. He is suspected of involvement in the poisoning of [Ukrainian president](/source/President_of_Ukraine) [Viktor Yushchenko](/source/Viktor_Yushchenko) in 2004.[1]

## Career

Satsyuk was a businessman before he joined the [Security Service of Ukraine](/source/Security_Service_of_Ukraine), where he eventually became the Deputy Chairman.[2]

## Allegations

Ukrainian prosecutors, after interviewing over 1,000 people, identified Satsyuk as being potentially involved in the poisoning of Yuschenko with [dioxin](/source/Dioxins_and_dioxin-like_compounds).[1] Yushchenko had attended a private dinner on 5 September 2004 held at Satsyuk's residence,[3] during that year's Ukrainian presidential elections. He was accompanied by two assistants, [Taras Zalessky](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Taras_Zalessky&action=edit&redlink=1) and [Alexei Poletukha](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Alexei_Poletukha&action=edit&redlink=1), the former vice-president of the [JS Bank «Ukraine»](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=JS_Bank_%C2%ABUkraine%C2%BB&action=edit&redlink=1).[2] According to *[The Times](/source/The_Times)* newspaper, "Ukraine’s pro-Russian government at the time was opposed to Yushchenko, fearing his pro-western tendencies and ambitions for Ukraine to join [NATO](/source/NATO)." Satsyuk was in hiding in [Moscow](/source/Moscow), [Russia](/source/Russia), where the government has given him [Russian citizenship](/source/Russian_nationality_law), meaning he couldn't be extradited for trial to another country.[1][4] When [Yanukovich](/source/Viktor_Yanukovych) became president of Ukraine, Satsyuk was removed from the wanted list and returned to his home town [Malyn](/source/Malyn) in the summer of 2011.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]
