# Voice interface card

A **voice interface card** (**VIC**) is a [hardware](/source/Computer_hardware) [interface](/source/Interface_(computer_science)) that simulates a [FXS](/source/Foreign_exchange_station) on a [router](/source/Router_(computing)) or [network switch](/source/Network_switch). This device port is used to interface [telephone](/source/Telephone) voice or other audio-based FXS devices.

Typically, a VIC contains one or more [RJ-11](/source/RJ-11) ports, allowing connections to basic telephone service ([POTS](/source/Plain_old_telephone_service)), equipment, keysets, and [PBXes](/source/Private_branch_exchange).[1]
