'''Vodnik Square''' ({{langx|sl|Vodnikov trg}}) is a town square in [Ljubljana](/source/Ljubljana), the capital of [Slovenia](/source/Slovenia). It spans the area from the [Dragon Bridge](/source/Dragon_Bridge_(Ljubljana)) across [Pogačar Square](/source/Poga%C4%8Dar_Square) ({{lang|sl|Pogačarjev trg}}) to the [Triple Bridge](/source/Triple_Bridge).

It is named after [Valentin Vodnik](/source/Valentin_Vodnik), a [Slovene](/source/Slovenes) [priest](/source/priest), [journalist](/source/journalist), and [poet](/source/poet) from the late [Enlightenment](/source/Age_of_Enlightenment) period. There is [a monument](/source/Vodnik_Monument) with a statue in the square commemorating him. It was sculpted by [Alojzij Gangl](/source/Alojzij_Gangl) and unveiled in 1889. Across the street from the monument is a path leading to [Castle Hill](/source/Castle_Hill%2C_Ljubljana).<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.slovenia.info/en/arhitekturne-znamenitosti/Vodnikov-trg-(Vodnik-square).htm?arhitekturne_znamenitosti=798&lng=2 |title=Slovenia.info |access-date=2008-03-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110718064714/http://www.slovenia.info/en/arhitekturne-znamenitosti/Vodnikov-trg-(Vodnik-square).htm?arhitekturne_znamenitosti=798&lng=2 |archive-date=2011-07-18 |url-status=live }}</ref>

In 1895, when an earthquake destroyed much of an old monastery containing a girls’ diocesan college and library, it had to be completely pulled down and the square became an outdoor market now called the [Ljubljana Central Market](/source/Ljubljana_Central_Market).<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.ljubljana.si/en/sights/squares/vodnik_square/ |title=Ljubljana.si |access-date=2008-03-20 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080412050635/http://www.ljubljana.si/en/sights/squares/vodnik_square/ |archive-date=2008-04-12 |url-status=dead }}</ref>
