**Vittorio Bachelet** (Italian pronunciation: [\[vitˈtɔːrjo baʃʃeˈlɛ\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Italian); 20 February 1926 – 12 February 1980) was an Italian academic and [politician](/source/Politician), former [vice president](/source/Vice_president) of the [High Council of the Judiciary](/source/High_Council_of_the_Judiciary_(Italy)).

On 12 February 1980, he was ambushed and murdered by the [Red Brigades](/source/Red_Brigades).[1]

## Biography

After having attended the [Azione Cattolica association](/source/Azione_Cattolica), Bachelet joined the [Italian Catholic Federation of University Students](/source/Italian_Catholic_Federation_of_University_Students) and graduated in Law at the [Sapienza University of Rome](/source/Sapienza_University_of_Rome), where he later taught.[2] He also taught in other Universities in [Pavia](/source/University_of_Pavia) and [Trieste](/source/University_of_Trieste).[3]

In 1959, Bachelet was appointed vice president of [Azione Cattolica](/source/Azione_Cattolica) by [Pope John XXIII](/source/Pope_John_XXIII), while in 1964 he was appointed President by [Pope Paul VI](/source/Pope_Paul_VI).[4]

Bachelet joined [Christian Democracy](/source/Christian_Democracy_(Italy)), being very close to [Aldo Moro](/source/Aldo_Moro), and in 1976 was elected vice president of the [High Council of the Judiciary](/source/High_Council_of_the_Judiciary_(Italy)) (elected by all the political parties in the [Parliament](/source/Italian_Parliament)), after having been for a few months a city councilor in [Rome](/source/Rome).

On 12 February 1980, at the end of a lesson, while talking with his assistant [Rosy Bindi](/source/Rosy_Bindi),[5] Bachelet was shot and [killed](/source/Murder) by an armed group of the [Red Brigades](/source/Red_Brigades), on the mezzanine of the staircase of the Faculty of Political Sciences of [La Sapienza](/source/Sapienza_University_of_Rome).[1] His funeral took place two days later at the [San Roberto Bellarmino Church](/source/San_Roberto_Bellarmino%2C_Rome) and was attended by [President](/source/President_of_Italy) [Sandro Pertini](/source/Sandro_Pertini) and [Prime minister](/source/Prime_minister_of_Italy) [Francesco Cossiga](/source/Francesco_Cossiga).[6]
