'''Visual MODFLOW''' (VMOD) is a [graphical interface](/source/Graphical_user_interface) (GUI) for the open source [groundwater modeling](/source/groundwater_modeling) engine [MODFLOW](/source/MODFLOW). VMOD was developed by [Waterloo Hydrogeologic](/source/Waterloo_Hydrogeologic) and first released in 1994, the first commercially available GUI for MODFLOW. In May 2012 a [.NET](/source/.NET) version of the software was rebranded as '''Visual MODFLOW Flex'''. The program includes proprietary extensions, such as MODFLOW-SURFACT, MT3DMS (mass-transport 3D multi-species) and a three-dimensional model explorer. Visual MODFLOW supports MODFLOW-2000, MODFLOW-2005, MODFLOW-NWT, MODFLOW-LGR, MODFLOW-SURFACT, and SEAWAT.

The software is used primarily by [hydrogeologist](/source/hydrogeologist)s to simulate [groundwater](/source/groundwater) flow and contaminant transport.

==History==
The original version of Visual MODFLOW, developed for [MS-DOS](/source/MS-DOS) by Nilson Guiguer, Thomas Franz and Bob Cleary, was released in August 1994. It was based on the [USGS](/source/United_States_Geological_Survey) [MODFLOW](/source/MODFLOW)-88 and MODPATH code, and resembled the FLOWPATH program developed by Waterloo Hydrogeologic Inc.{{Clarify|date=August 2021|reason=resembled in what way?}} The first [Windows](/source/Microsoft_Windows) based version was released in 1997.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.flowpath.com/|title=Waterloo Hydrogeologic, Inc. - Frame Setup|date=1997-07-07|access-date=2016-11-03|url-status=bot: unknown|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/19970707171439/http://www.flowpath.com/|archivedate=1997-07-07}}</ref> The main programmers were Sergei Schmakov, Alexander Liftshits, and Sean Wilson. A .NET version that included non-grid-based, graphical conceptual modelling features was released in 2012.

On January 10, 2005, Waterloo Hydrogeologic was acquired by [Schlumberger](/source/Schlumberger)'s Water Services Technology Group.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.flowpath.com/whi-slb-press-release.htm |title=Waterloo Hydrogeologic Inc, - Schlumberger Press Release |website=www.flowpath.com |access-date=12 January 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070929132042/http://www.flowpath.com/whi-slb-press-release.htm |archive-date=29 September 2007 |url-status=dead}}</ref>
