Visbek is the northernmost municipality in [Vechta district](/source/Landkreis_Vechta), bordering the [rural districts](/source/Landkreis) of [Cloppenburg](/source/Landkreis_Cloppenburg) and [Oldenburg](/source/Landkreis_Oldenburg). == Middle Ages ==

Historical tradition dates back as far as to the late 8th century, when upon order of the Frankish king [Charlemagne](/source/Charlemagne) (later Emperor [Charles the Great](/source/Charles_the_Great)), the abbey of Visbek - then called "cellula fiscbechi", under Abbot [Gerbert Castus](/source/Gerbert_Castus) - played a major role in the [Christianization](/source/Christianization) of the newly conquered surrounding [Saxon](/source/Saxon) territories of [Lerigau](/source/Gau_(country_subdivision)), [Hasegau](/source/Gau_(country_subdivision)) and [Venkigau](/source/Gau_(country_subdivision)).

== Megalithic tombs ==

The Visbek region, however, had been populated even before the [Middle Ages](/source/Middle_Ages), in fact as far back as the [Neolithic](/source/Neolithic) Period, as evinced by numerous [megalith](/source/megalith)ic tombs of the [Funnelbeaker culture](/source/Funnelbeaker_culture) (3,500 - 2,800 BC) that may still be seen today.
